Repurpose Your🌲Christmas Tree: after the holidays
The Chatham Lake and Dam Committee is sponsoring a new program to repurpose live Christmas trees after the holidays to promote a healthier lake ecosystem ♻️
Why Use Christmas Trees?
Submerged trees serve as essential habitats for aquatic life. The branches provide cover and shadows for smaller fish, camouflaging them from predators like bass. They also serve as a substrate (base) for macro-invertebrates, a key food source for our fish population.
We are planning to stock the lake with various game and feeder fish between now and spring. The addition of these habitats is expected to enhance fish species diversity and abundance over time. This successful method has been used by Flat Top Lake for several years.
- How to Participate
- Only live trees can be used.
- Please ensure all decorations and lights are removed.
- Flocked (fake snow) trees cannot be used.
- Drop-Off Information
- A marked drop-off area will be available in the field beside the dam after the holiday season.
- The Lake and Dam Committee will collect, weight, and place the trees in groups in the spring in the most suitable lake areas.
- The number of habitats created depends on how many trees we receive.
